# authorship

«authorship» in Mova's school dictionary: **The fact of being the person who wrote a book, article…** — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples.

### part of speech

noun (authorship, usually no plural)

### meaning for a pupil

1) The fact of being the person who wrote a book, article, song or other piece of work. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/authorship/#m1)

2) The question of who wrote something, when it is not certain. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/A/authorship/#m2)

### sense in the lessons

In English and history lessons it appears when we ask who wrote a text, and in discussions about copying and giving credit. It tells the reader who made a piece of writing. Common phrases: "the authorship of", "claim authorship", "disputed authorship", "joint authorship".

### note

Usually uncountable: "authorship", not "an authorship". It comes from "author" plus "-ship" (like friendship). Copying someone's work and saying it is yours is called plagiarism and is cheating.
