### sense in the lessons

In history lessons it is part of the story of the Soviet Union under Stalin: private farms were taken and joined into collective farms (kolkhozes); farmers who resisted were punished, and grain was seized. In Ukraine this led to the man-made famine of 1932–1933 called the Holodomor, in which millions of people died; Ukraine and many countries recognise it as a genocide. China also collectivised farms in the 1950s. Phrases: «forced collectivisation», «the collectivisation of agriculture».

UK spelling with -s- (collectivisation), US spelling with -z- (collectivization). Uncountable. The verb is «collectivise» (collectivize). Do not confuse it with friendly sharing such as a co-op that people choose to join: collectivisation in history usually means it was forced.
