As a subject and the past in general it has no «a»: «I like history». As one account it is countable: «a history of France», plural «histories». Adjective: «historic» (important in history: a historic day) and «historical» (about history: a historical film); they are easy to confuse. A «historian» studies history. History is about what really happened; «story» can be made up.
