### sense in the lessons

In everyday life, people mow the lawn with a lawnmower, which is dangerous: children should keep away when it is running and never touch the blades. Lawns need water, sun and cutting. In science, a lawn is a habitat for worms, insects and birds; daisies and clover often grow in lawns. In maths, lawns appear in area and perimeter problems: a rectangular lawn 8 m by 5 m has an area of 40 square metres. Phrases: "mow the lawn", "keep off the lawn", "lawnmower", "front/back lawn".

Countable: a lawn, lawns. Spelling: aw, as in "saw". In maths, "area of the lawn" = length × width (square units), and "fence around the lawn" = perimeter = add all sides. In the USA "yard" is used for the whole garden area, and the lawn is the grassy part.
