### meaning for a pupil

1) -nd: the letters written after a number that ends in 2 (except 12) to make an ordinal number: 2nd = second, 22nd = twenty-second, 102nd. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/nd/#m1)

2) ND: short for North Dakota, a state in the USA. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/N/nd/#m2)

### sense in the lessons

In maths and English, ordinal numbers show position or order: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th. «nd» goes after numbers ending in 2 because «second» ends in «-nd». Used in races (came 2nd), floors (2nd floor), and lists.

### note

Rule: 1st, 2nd, 3rd for numbers ending in 1, 2, 3 — but 11th, 12th, 13th use «th». So 12th, not «12nd»; 32nd, 42nd. Do not write «2th» or «2st».
