fragment (th — letters; also suffix -th)

### meaning for a pupil

1) Not a full word: the two letters "t" and "h" that together make one sound, as in "the" or "think". [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/th/#m1)

2) The ending "-th" that makes ordinal numbers: 4th, 5th, 20th. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/th/#m2)

3) An abbreviation, for example "Th" for Thursday. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/T/th/#m3)

### sense in the lessons

In reading (phonics), "th" is a digraph with two sounds: soft in "think", buzzy in "this". In maths, "-th" turns numbers into ordinals (fourth, tenth) and also fractions (a fifth, a tenth). Phrases: 4th place, one tenth.

### examples

### note

"-th" is used for ordinals except first (1st), second (2nd), third (3rd) and numbers ending in them like 21st, 22nd, 23rd; but 11th, 12th, 13th. In maths, "a fifth" = 1/5, so "-th" can mean a fraction.
