# yen

«yen» in Mova's school dictionary: **the money of Japan; its sign is ¥** — its meaning for a pupil, its sense in the lessons and examples.

### part of speech

noun (yen — plural the same); noun (a yen — informal desire)

### meaning for a pupil

1) (money) The yen is the money of Japan; its sign is ¥. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/Y/yen/#m1)

2) (informal) A yen is a strong wish or longing for something, as in a yen to travel. [tree →](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/Y/yen/#m2)

### sense in the lessons

In maths and geography lessons, problems may change pounds or dollars into yen; one yen is worth very little, so prices in Japan have big numbers (a snack might cost 150 yen). In everyday talk, having a yen for something means really wanting it.

### examples

### note

Plural is the same: one yen, 500 yen (not yens). In maths, a big number of yen is not much money, because one yen is worth less than a penny or a cent. The Chinese yuan has a similar sign but is different money.
