# Truth

**Gist.** Lies and flattery destroy trust; truth is the foundation of friendship and life together.

**Conditions and exceptions.** Flattery for gain goes against truth; sincere praise does not. A joke everyone understands as a joke is not a lie.

**Examples.**

- The Fox and the Crow (Aesop): the fox flatters the crow so that she opens her beak and drops the cheese. Flattery for gain.
- The Boy Who Cried "Wolf!" (Aesop): after several deceptions nobody believed him when the wolf really came. Lies destroy trust.

**Sources.** Aesop's fables (public domain); the commandment "you shall not bear false witness" (Ex 20:16).
