## What it is about

The volume asks how grammatical devices organise narrative text across Germanic languages (German, Dutch, English and Icelandic) over time. The introduction sets out narration as a text type, a discourse mode and a discourse relation. The eight papers cover left dislocation and the pluperfect in German, clause-combining with *da* and *so* in translated German and Dutch, the progressive in Icelandic, light adverbs such as *þá*, *þar* and *nú* in Old Icelandic, and verb-first declaratives. Two English chapters are relevant. Cichosz (pp. 267–299) counts verb-initial declaratives in the YCOE: 840 clauses in the corpus, of which Bede has 459 (more than half), and finds that V1 is mostly narrative but also marks known referents. Los and Coretta (pp. 301–338) compare Old English relatives introduced by *se* with those introduced by *þe*, and the authors find that *se*-relatives show similarities with the V2 relatives of Dutch and German.

## Ideas

- I1. Add a narrative-inversion cue to `world/src/narr.rs`: a clause-initial temporal adverb followed by a verb and a subject marks the next event in the story. Measure on Early Modern narrative prose, including the KJV's "And it came to pass".
- I2. Test the Cichosz split (narrative versus known-referent use of V1) as a feature for the coreference sieve in `coref/src/sieve.rs`: a V1 clause with a pronoun subject that repeats a known referent should keep the antecedent.
- I3. Follow the Los and Coretta point that a relative clause can reintroduce a main protagonist. Count the cases in `world/src/story.rs` and check whether they are the same as the cases where the sieve links a pronoun.
- I4. Count the frequencies in the paper's tables by text, as the authors do, before any rule is written, and keep the counts in a BTreeMap order so two runs agree.

## For Mova

The English chapters are [30. Pragmatics and discourse: overview](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/docs/languages/en/30-pragmatics-overview/), `36-discourse-relations.md` and `38-dialogue-and-discourse-markers.md`, and `languages/en-x-emode/` for the Early Modern narrative texts. The code is `world/src/narr.rs`, `world/src/events.rs`, `coref/src/sieve.rs`, and the parser `en/src/parse.rs` for inverted word order. The measures are the agreement of the narrative cue with hand-marked event sequences in Early Modern texts, and the coreference F1 on CorefUD with and without the referent-repeat feature. The German and Icelandic chapters are not Mova's data; the English parts are.
