## What it is about

Lexicons gloss אִישׁ as "man, adult male". Building on Alison Grant's 1977 count of about 2 170 occurrences (74% "any or each member of a defined group", only 20% a particular individual), Stein argues that the word's primary sense is *affiliation*: a person seen as belonging to a group or standing for another party. He shows that אִישׁ behaves like the relational בֵּן "son of", not like the stand-alone אָדָם; it occurs with verbs that presume membership, as the individual counterpart of collective nouns, in "each one … his fellow" constructions, and in a representative sense (an agent or emissary). By his count at least 87% of uses fit the affiliation reading; maleness is salient only in a minority. The same holds for אִשָּׁה.

## Ideas

- I1. In the Torah dictionary, order the senses of אִישׁ as: each/any member of a group; husband/representative of; a man (male) — with counts from our trees, using Stein's syntactic cues (distributive "אִישׁ … אָחִיו/רֵעֵהוּ", construct or suffix, apposition to a collective).
- I2. A distributive rule: אִישׁ as subject of a singular verb after a plural group referent, or in אִישׁ … אָחִיו / אִישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵהוּ, means "each one"; set it as a quantifier in the event reader rather than as a new male participant.
- I3. Measure the share of אִישׁ tokens whose English (JPS 1917) alignment is "each/every/one/any" versus "man", as a check on Grant's 74%.

## For Mova

I1 goes into `macula dict` (the Torah dictionary) and [The lexicon](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/docs/languages/hbo/10-lexicon/) (polysemy, the family terms list); I2 applies to the world/event reader and `08-syntax.md`; I3 is a measure with the aligned JPS text.
