## What it is about

The paper replaces hand-built feature templates with a BiLSTM over word and POS embeddings, trained jointly with the parser. A parser state is represented by the BiLSTM vectors of only a few items: in the greedy arc-hybrid transition parser, the top three stack items and the first buffer item (an extended set uses 11 vectors), scored by an MLP. The same encoder also feeds a first-order graph parser with loss-augmented training and a labeller that shares the encoder. Training uses a dynamic oracle, with aggressive exploration: a wrong action is sometimes followed when it scores within a margin of the right one (probability 0.1 in the experiments). Without pretrained embeddings the parsers reach 93.1 UAS on English Penn Treebank with Stanford dependencies and 86.6 UAS on Chinese, and with pretrained embeddings and the extended set they reach 93.9 and 87.6.

## Ideas

- I1. en/src/parse.rs: cut the perceptron's feature templates to the four positions this paper uses (s2, s1, s0, b0) and measure the LAS loss on EWT dev through `en parse-eval`; if the loss is small, the richer templates are not paying for themselves.
- I2. en/src/parse.rs: add aggressive exploration to training (follow a wrong action with probability 0.1 when it is within a margin of the right one) and measure LAS on EWT dev, twice, to confirm determinism.
- I3. gparse: word dropout with the paper's frequency rule (replace a word by the unknown symbol with probability alpha / (count + alpha), alpha = 0.25) and measure LAS on EWT dev and on ATIS dev, where lowercase queries give 63.0 LAS now.
- I4. gparse: a graph parser with a shared labeller head trained on the same encoder, compared with the current separate labelling step, measured by UAS on EWT dev.

## For Mova

The ideas touch the feature set of `en/src/parse.rs`, the training loop of `gparse`, and the ATIS evaluation. The chapters are `languages/en/20-syntax-overview` and `languages/en/26-questions` (ATIS queries are questions and commands). Measure first I1, which is an ablation of the current model and needs no new training code; then I2.
