## What it is about

Hebrew smixut, the marked noun-noun construct (ben ha-melekh, "son of the king", against ben melekh), is very productive and makes up about 40% of noun modifiers in the authors' corpus. The paper treats smixut in HUGG, a generator for Hebrew noun phrases, and asks whether the decision to use smixut can stay inside the syntactic component. The constraints are syntactic (one noun modifier per head, definiteness marked only on the modifier), lexical (frozen compounds and foreign words cannot take smixut), semantic (about two dozen head–modifier relations, such as purpose, has-part, location and material) and pragmatic (contrast, naming). A semantic default was checked on 853 complex noun phrases: about 90% agreement among three judges, and regeneration matches the corpus smixut choice in more than 95% of cases. The authors conclude that lexical and pragmatic factors cannot be computed inside the syntax, so a smixut feature must stay in the input.

## Ideas

- I1. Definiteness as a rule on UD trees: an nmod pair is a smixut candidate only when head and modifier agree in definiteness, which is the paper's own test ("a son of the king" versus the other three combinations). Count how many nmod pairs in the Hebrew treebank pass it.
- I2. A default-and-override table: default to the relation-based construction, with a list of frozen compounds that must not take it. The frozen list belongs in [8. Lexicon and register](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/docs/languages/he/08-lexicon-register/), the default in [Nouns, adjectives, pronouns and numerals](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/docs/languages/he/04-nouns-adjectives-pronouns/).
- I3. Measure the default as the paper does: on a small set of complex noun phrases labelled by hand, check how often the rule picks the construction the corpus uses, and count the cases that need a pragmatic feature.

## For Mova

I1 is a rule for Hebrew nmod versus compound in [11. Modern Hebrew in Universal Dependencies](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/docs/languages/he/11-ud-analysis/). I2 goes into [Nouns, adjectives, pronouns and numerals](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/docs/languages/he/04-nouns-adjectives-pronouns/) and [8. Lexicon and register](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/docs/languages/he/08-lexicon-register/). I3 is a measurement on a hand-labelled set. The paper is NC: nothing from its text is carried into a release.
