## What it is about

The paper asks whether Wiktionary can serve as a dialect lexicon for English, in two parts. First, its coverage is compared with the Oxford English Dictionary for six Inner-Circle and six Outer-Circle varieties. In total, Wiktionary has 33,043 entries against 37,679 in the OED (13.1% fewer), but it is larger for Canadian, Irish and Australian English and for all Outer-Circle varieties, while the OED is larger for American and British English. For New Zealand English, word-formation categories in Wiktionary correlate with the OED's (Pearson R = 0.883), and Wiktionary holds more multi-word expressions. Second, the dialect features are tested on Reddit country communities, using relative frequency per 100,000 words. Alignment with the national subreddit is strong for submission titles but weaker for comments, where only Irish, Canadian and Australian features stay aligned. Many false hits come from Māori loanwords that are orthographic homonyms of Tagalog particles, such as mo, pa and po.

## Ideas

- I1. `world/src/dictionary.rs`: a region label per sense, stored as a sorted set (BTreeSet), so that a dialect word is available only with its region. Measure coverage against a held-out list of region-tagged words.
- I2. A homonym guard: a token that is also a frequent word in a second language gets its dialect score lowered, with a fixed list of known clashes. Negative control: a shuffled corpus must not raise the score.
- I3. Score by register: weight titles and short posts separately from long comments, as the paper finds that register changes the result. Check with run-twice determinism.

## For Mova

Chapters: [37. Register and variation](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/docs/languages/en/37-register-and-variation/), [08. National varieties](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/docs/languages/en/08-national-varieties/), [19. The lexicon: vocabulary, multiword expressions and register](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/docs/languages/en/19-lexicon-mwe-register/). Code: `world/src/dictionary.rs`, `en/src/tok.rs` (diacritics and token cleaning). Measure: coverage per variety and the homonym-guard error rate with a corrupted-input control. Licence note: the paper is CC BY, but the Wiktionary text it uses is CC BY-SA; the data are for tests and measurement only, never carried into a release.
