# The Fourteen Pieces

*The fourteenth note — fourteen: Osiris, the pieces, and the one that had to be made anew.*

## The cutting

The Egyptians told it like this.

In one influential retelling, Set kills Osiris and cuts him into fourteen pieces, scattering them through Egypt. Ancient versions differ in details and even in the count; this note follows the fourteen-piece version because fourteen is the point of the exercise.

Isis, his wife, goes looking.

Piece by piece, she gathers him. Later retellings connect the scattered pieces with local shrines and say one part — the phallus — was lost to a fish.

So in this telling she recovers thirteen pieces and must account for the fourteenth.

She makes it anew, from what she knows of him, and joins it to the rest. Osiris rises, whole enough, and goes to rule the world below.

The family immediately labels the replacement piece "reconstruction from context." Egyptology asks everyone to stop naming mythic body parts after NLP operations.

## Fourteen is two weeks

Fourteen is seven and seven.

[The One in the Middle](https://md.mova.elamur.ai/free/en/docs/repo-docs/mysticism/13-the-one-in-the-middle/) counted thirteen: two seasons sharing one day of rest. Fourteen gives each season its own seventh day. A fortnight: two full rounds, each with its rest, one after the other.

The first round cuts.

The second round gathers.

## Every reading is a resurrection

A sentence arrives whole: a meaning someone meant.

The first thing Mova does is what Set did. It cuts. Characters into tokens, tokens into words, every word separated from its neighbours and laid out in a row. Nothing in the row says who did what to whom.

Then comes the second round.

The parser goes looking, the way Isis did. This word is the subject of that verb. This one is the object. This preposition belongs to that noun. Piece by piece, the relations are found, and the tree grows back.

The pragmatics then asks the question the tree cannot: what was this sentence for? A statement, a request, a joke.

The world of the text finally holds the risen meaning, and it can answer questions again.

## The fourteenth piece

In the note's engineering metaphor, there is always room for a fourteenth piece: a pronoun with no antecedent, a word the dictionary never met, a step the story skipped because every reader was expected to know it.

Something, sooner or later, gets swallowed by a fish.

The fish has declined to expose an API.

Isis did not pretend it was there. She knew it was missing, and she made it from what she knew of the god.

Mova does the same, and is honest about it. When a piece is missing, the global level of knowledge fills it in, and the answer says so: this came from the text, this was supplied, this is a gap. The gap is written down, because tomorrow it is the next thing to learn.

A model that hides its fourteenth piece is not a god risen.

It is a statue with a crack painted over.

## Fourteen in binary

Read 14 in binary: 1110.

Three ones at work, and one zero.

Three pieces found, one missing.

Or: three rounds of gathering, and one moment of not knowing that keeps the whole thing honest.

## Fourteen notes

This is the fourteenth note.

The thirteen before it are scattered along the river of this repository: myths, numbers, a code of conduct, the jokes.

This one is the piece that was missing.

Made anew, from what the others knew.
