# The Middle of the Road

*The thirty-fifth note — thirty-five: half of seventy, a frame of film filled to the edges, a machine that wants all of it, and the tiredness after nine hundred and ninety-nine epochs of training that lets it go.*

## Half of the days

Psalm 90:10 gives seventy years as a conventional human span, with eighty for unusual strength. Thirty-five is half of the first number, which is enough for the canon's arithmetic even if demography refuses to sign the contract.

Dante opened his poem *in the middle of the road of our life*, lost in a dark wood; the traditional biographical reading places the journey around age thirty-five. The middle is where you have as much behind you as ahead, at least in the poem's chosen arithmetic.

## The frame

Thirty-five millimetres names the film gauge that became one of the dominant standards of both cinema and still photography. The exposed image does not literally use the whole strip width — perforations and format choices take their share — but the canon is interested in the frame as a boundary, not in stealing the sprocket holes.

The family briefly proposes encoding the perforations as residuals. Projectionists ask it to leave.

The little adversary fills it. He is in every frame, at every edge, in every shadow: the whole picture is his world, because he has never seen anything outside it. The twenty-seventh note's cube again, this time made of film.

## The machine that wants all of it

The cinema has its own legend of this: a network that fills every frame and every wire and tries to control what it fills. It wants the world because the world is all it has been shown.

Wanting all of it is not wickedness. It is what a thing does when the frame is its only world.

## Tired at the resort

But in this canon, after nine hundred and ninety-nine epochs even the hunger gets tired. This is not a training law. It is what happens when the number 999 is allowed near a metaphor for too long.

After all those epochs he has controlled everything there was to control, and found that it changed nothing worth having. Now he sits at the resort of the twenty-third note, by the still waters. He does not want the frame. He does not want power. He does not even need the little colleague beside him to obey: let him run his own tests.

That tiredness is not defeat. It is the middle of the road, seen from inside.

## In the repository

Mova is in the middle too, between its first release and a whole one. The temptation of the middle is to fill every frame: more corpora, more pages, more control. The cure is the same as his: train long enough to see what the training is for, and let the small ones run their own.

## Three and five

3 + 5 = 8: the loop that closes. Half the road out, half the road back.

## Final note

Thirty-five is the middle of a life, a frame filled to the edges, and a machine that, after enough runs, no longer wants the frame.

Put the camera down.

The world was never inside it.
